Laptop Not Turning On? 7 Causes and How to Fix It
Why a laptop that won't turn on is usually repairable
A laptop that refuses to power on feels like a disaster, but in most cases the machine itself is fine — a single component or connection has failed. Before assuming the worst (and the cost of a new laptop), it helps to understand the common causes. Some you can check yourself in minutes; others need a technician.
The key is to work from the simplest, cheapest cause to the most complex. The order below reflects how a professional technician diagnoses a no-power laptop.
1. Dead or faulty charger / adapter
The most common cause of a 'dead' laptop is actually a dead charger. If there's no charging light when you plug in, test with another compatible adapter. A frayed cable, loose pin or failed power brick will stop the laptop charging and, if the battery is empty, prevent it from turning on at all.
2. Completely drained or failed battery
If the battery is fully drained, plug in and wait 15–30 minutes before trying again. If the laptop only runs while plugged in and dies the moment you unplug it, the battery has likely failed and needs replacement. Swollen batteries should be handled urgently and professionally.
3. Power drain / static charge
A simple power reset clears residual charge that can lock up the board. Unplug the charger, remove the battery if it's removable, hold the power button for 30 seconds, then reconnect and try again. This harmless step revives a surprising number of laptops.
4. Loose or faulty RAM
If the laptop powers on (fans spin, lights come on) but the screen stays black, loose RAM is a frequent culprit. Reseating the memory module often restores it. In humid conditions, contacts can oxidise and lose connection.
5. Display or backlight fault
Sometimes the laptop is actually on but the screen is dark. Shine a torch at the screen — if you can faintly see the desktop, the backlight or display cable has failed rather than the whole laptop. Connecting an external monitor confirms this.
6. Charging IC or power-circuit failure
If the charger and battery are fine but the laptop still won't power on, the fault may be on the motherboard — commonly a failed charging IC, MOSFET or fuse. This requires chip-level diagnosis and micro-soldering, but it's usually far cheaper than replacing the board.
7. Liquid damage or board short
If the laptop suffered a spill or shows a burning smell, stop immediately and don't keep trying to power it on — you risk spreading corrosion or worsening a short. Professional cleaning and component-level repair can often fully recover a liquid-damaged laptop if you act fast.
