How to Speed Up a Slow Computer (Without Buying a New One)
Most slow computers can be fixed, not replaced
Before spending on a new machine, it's worth knowing that the vast majority of slow computers can be dramatically improved with a few targeted changes. The single biggest cause of slowness in older PCs is the hard drive — and that's the easiest thing to fix.
1. Upgrade to an SSD — the #1 speed boost
If your computer still uses a traditional spinning hard drive (HDD), switching to a solid-state drive (SSD) is the single most impactful upgrade you can make. Boot times drop from minutes to seconds, apps open instantly, and the whole system feels new. This one change often revives a 'too slow to use' computer completely.
2. Add more RAM
If your PC slows to a crawl when several programs or browser tabs are open, you likely need more RAM. Going from 4GB to 8GB (or 8GB to 16GB) lets the system multitask smoothly without constantly swapping to disk.
3. Clean up startup programs
Many apps quietly launch at startup and run in the background, slowing boot and stealing resources. Disabling the ones you don't need (via Task Manager's Startup tab) gives an immediate improvement.
4. Remove viruses and malware
Hidden malware is a common cause of mysterious slowdowns, pop-ups and high disk usage. A proper scan and removal can restore lost performance — and protect your data at the same time.
5. Free up disk space
A nearly full drive slows everything down. Clear temporary files, empty the recycle bin, uninstall unused programs, and move large files (videos, photos) to external or cloud storage.
6. Clean the dust and check cooling
In Dhaka's dusty environment, clogged fans and heatsinks cause overheating, which forces the CPU to throttle (slow down) to protect itself. Cleaning and re-pasting often restores lost speed and stops random shutdowns.
7. Update Windows and drivers
Outdated drivers and a backlog of pending updates can cause sluggishness and instability. Keeping Windows and key drivers current improves both speed and security.
8. Reinstall Windows as a last resort
If your PC is bogged down by years of clutter, a clean Windows reinstall returns it to like-new responsiveness. Always back up your data first — a technician can handle the whole process safely.
